Hype (self proclaimed jungle purist) versus Skream (the lynchpin of drum 'n' bass's precocious younger sibling, dubstep). Skream and Hype are headliners, the real deal. Both are pioneers of their sound, at the vanguard of the scenes we know today. Aside from finding its roots in grime and two-step, dubstep is thought to have partly grown from the ashes of disaffected junglists experimenting with a new production ethic around the turn of the century.
However, tonight Hype proves that drum 'n' bass, whilst some might say was M.I.A., was never obsolete. A battle DJ to be reckoned with since the 80s, Hype’s career propelled him into the spotlight of Kiss FM, where the popularity of his residency snowballed to astronomic proportions. Child prodigy Skream has been DJing and producing for almost a decade now, and it was his track, 'Midnight Request Line' that dragged him and an army of others into the public eye.
Head-to-toe, dubstep and drum 'n' bass perform an intoxicating kind of magic, rooted in a mutual love for the low end frequencies which Potterrow’s sizeable soundsystem delivers beautifully. First up is Nass TSC (Mutiny, TSC), whose surreal, seamless medley of dirty, broken dubstep, underground hip hop and fresh, frenetic jungle sets the tone for tonight’s variety. Big time Xplicit resident ENO is next to take the stage, joined by Xplicit’s MC BZ, progressing Nass’s prelude into an adrenachrone joyride of progressive jungle and drum 'n' bass just as the main room begins to swell. By the time Skream takes the stage, Potterrow’s capacity of 1000 is well on the way to a full house.
Typically, he rolls out tsunami after sub-bass, with obligatory big hits like 'Midnight Request Line' and ‘It’s Not Over’ (Klaxons remix) proving the weaker moments – to a weary ear, anyway – of an otherwise steel-plated set. Emotions are running high as Hype lets rip full-throttle with his nimbler bass and breaks. Looming old skool jungle tracks weave into industrial style hardstep tracks, rounded off with a dextrous scratchathon. To quote his statement on realplayaz.co.uk, “believe me when I say I am no fucking bandwagon jumper, just a hard working Hackney man doing this thing called drum and bass/jungle.” We do bruv, we do.
