Departure Lounge: Bonobo and Underling
Innovative club night lives up to its billing

The idea behind ‘Departure Lounge’ at the Caves was to provide an “original, friendly and unique space for open-minded souls to enjoy a mix of music that can't be found anywhere elseâ€. This rather pessimistic view of the Edinburgh club scene nonetheless holds some truth: the musical range and quality at ‘Departure Lounge’ is undeniably distinctive, for this city at least.
Opening the night with a sharp live performance is Underling, a hip-hop act from Dunfermline. Their set is a mix of up-beat and inclusive rap lyrics, electronic brass samples, vinyl scratching, jazz keyboard, live drumming, and a rich selection of deliciously deep purring from the jazzy double bass. Talented and engaging, they command the stage while having just as much fun as their audience.
After the heavy set from Underling and just prior to Bonobo’s performance, an air of scepticism seems to sweep the crowd. After the release of the 2001 album ‘Animal Magic’, Simon Green, the man behind Bonobo became identified with the ambiguous and slightly vacuous umbrella of ‘chill out’ beats. From the opening moments of his show, it soon becomes clear that however you want to ill-define ‘chill out’, Bonobo as a performer is far more than that. His set is an emotional combination of twilight melodies, textured percussion, and instrumental flicks towards world-music inspirations, all brought together by a sensitive and sophisticated delivery.
From seductive rhythms of Latin jazz, the music moved seamlessly into a joyous exploration of Afrobeat, then into some full-bodied old-school hip-hop. To close, Bonobo shifted into a higher hear to introduce a little electro of the urbane LCD-Soundsystem kind for a drum n’ bass climax. The tracks never clash, and the crowd never stop dancing. If you enjoy a night defined by musical diversity and a watertight DJ set, ‘Departure Lounge’ should make you very happy for the year to come.
